The Mona M03, a new EV in Xpeng’s lineup, made its debut today, July 3rd, in a live broadcast in China. The M03, jointly developed by Didi and Xpeng, is a pure electric compact sedan targeting the 100,000 – 150,000 yuan ($14,000 – $21,000) market. According to Xpeng, the M03 has a maximum range of 620 km and is now open for pre-orders. At its debut, only exterior shots of the sedan were shown, as the interior is still veiled. Xpeng’s chairman, He Xiaopeng announced during the live broadcast that the sedan will be officially launched in August 2024, as plans are underway for mass production.
With a drag coefficient of 0.194 cd, the M03 is set to displace BYD’s YangWang U6 (0.195 cd) as the most aerodynamic electric sedan in the world. Xpeng’s new EV will also surpass the Tesla Model S Plaid (0.208 cd), the Mercedes-Benz EQS (0.20 cd), and the Lucid Air (0.20 cd). Factors that contribute to this impressive drag coefficient include low-drag wheels (0.013 cd), the rear wind guide plates (0.015 cd), and the active air intake on the lower front bumper (0.023 cd). Xpeng claims the M03’s sleek design enhances the car’s efficiency by 15%, giving it an extra 60 km range.
Currently the Mona M03 has smaller dimensions than any other model from the automaker. For dimensions, it measures 4780/1896/1445 mm in length, width, and height, with a 2815 mm wheelbase. Xpeng offers 18- and 19-inch wheels for buyers to choose from. The new sedan has 300 built-in LED lamp beads capable of illuminating up to 150 meters. Other features include a panoramic skylight roof and intelligent driving. The EV is available in 5 colors.
The Mona M03 will be powered by single electric motors producing either 140 kW or 160 kW, with Innovative Automotive and Physis Technology providing the motors. Cruising range options for the M03 are pegged at 515 km and 620 km, respectively. Furthermore, both versions of the Mona M03 come with BYD Blade lithium iron phosphate battery packs and have a 155 km/h top speed.
The M03 is the first model from Xpeng’s Mona (Made of New AI) project, jointly produced the the EV department of Didi. Xpeng had earlier announced that the M03 comes with a 621-liter trunk, comfortably better than anything in its class. The new EV, which has suffered launch delays, is expected to be in the Chinese market in the third quarter of 2024.
