Fang Cheng Bao, a brand known for rugged off-roaders (the Leopard series) and urban SUVs (the Titan series) has, on September 16, 2026, officially launched its first sedan line – the Formula S series – throwing it into the 200,000 yuan electric sport sedan market.

The car comes in two body styles: the Formula S is a coupe-style three-box sedan, and the Formula S GT is a shooting brake, priced at 189,900-229,900 yuan and 219,900-239,900 yuan respectively. This official price is 40,000 yuan cheaper than the earlier pre-order price range. Let’s take a look at what we know about the Formula S series so far.

The Formula S series shares its design language with the Fang Cheng Bao sports car, the Formula X. The front features “Leopard Eye” irregular headlights made up of dual U-shaped daytime running lights and LED units, with four through-flow air ducts in the nose for aerodynamics.

Size is the car’s most immediate selling point. At nearly 5.1 metres long, the Formula S series has moved into the mid-to-large sedan class – a full size up on the Xiaomi SU7 and the Tesla Model 3.

The interior pursues a technology home aesthetic, a deliberate contrast to the aggressive exterior. It offers three two-tone colour schemes, 128-colour ambient lighting, a floating central screen, and a 26-inch AR-HUD. The steering wheel uses a hexagonal design and the centre console retains physical buttons.

Powertrain & Performance

All-electric across the range, using BYD’s second-generation Blade battery, available in rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions.

Rear-wheel drive comes in two power levels: the Formula S offers 245 kW and 300 kW single-motor options; the Formula S GT RWD is only offered with the 300 kW high-power version. All-wheel drive produces a combined 490 kW (about 666 hp), with a claimed 0-100 km/h of as little as 3.6 seconds.

Two battery capacities are available: the entry version uses a 76.744 kWh pack for 730 km CLTC range; the long-range version upgrades to 92.093 kWh, giving the Formula S a maximum CLTC range of 900 km and the Formula S GT 850 km. All versions get flash charging, with official figures of 10-70% in about 5 minutes and 10–97% in about 9 minutes.

Driving Dynamics

The chassis is the Formula S series’ core technical selling point.

The car debuts the Yunian-M intelligent magnetorheological suspension, which uses the physical properties of magnetorheological fluid to adjust damping in milliseconds, and supports road-preview sensing to identify potholes ahead and proactively adjust stiffness. The Yunian-M chassis algorithm supports continuous OTA upgrades.

Suspension configuration varies by version: the entry version uses Yunian-C (fixed damping), while mid and high trims can choose Yunian-A (dual-chamber air suspension + CDC) or Yunian-M (magnetorheological).

Notably, Yunian-A and Yunian-M versions with the same powertrain and range are priced identically, leaving the suspension choice to the buyer.

The car also offers a drift mode and an assisted drift mode. The millisecond-level response of Yunian-M should, in theory, follow dynamic inputs faster than conventional CDC suspension in hard driving, but the real-world road behaviour needs to be verified.

Technology & Infotainment

On driver assistance, the entire range comes standard with God’s Eye B with lidar, mounted on the roof, enabling highway NOA and urban NOA, plus automated parking.

The cabin runs BYD Smart Ecosystem 2.0, built around the central screen and using three open interfaces – PIN, magnetic, and threaded – to enable an expandable, customisable cabin.

Specific examples include: magnetic ambient lighting that can be added to either side of the central screen; a Diva smart dial that can swap “heads”; a physical button strip on top of the screen with swappable keycaps, where buttons can be customised to trigger sport mode, the front trunk, and more; and even a wireless guitar for in-car karaoke.

Connectivity supports CarPlay and the Android ecosystem, with a 20-speaker Devialet audio system.

Practicality & Ownership

The Formula S series gives fairly honest storage figures: a 151 L electric front trunk + a 600 L boot + 40 storage points throughout the car. The front trunk opens with a manual tap.

Comfort features include a zero-gravity front passenger seat (heating/ventilation/massage), a fridge, 128-colour ambient lighting, and a fragrance system.

On safety, high-strength steel, high-strength aluminium, and composite materials make up 84.8% of the body, with 2,000 MPa hot-formed steel at key points. It has 11 airbags, with side curtains that hold pressure for 6 seconds.

A high-speed tyre-blowout stabilisation system supports straight-line blowout assistance up to 190 km/h and cornering blowout assistance up to 156 km/h.

During launch, eleven purchase benefits were offered, including 18,000 yuan of purchase benefits, 2,999 yuan of Diva benefits, one year of free flash charging, driver-assistance assurance, and 0-interest / 0-down-payment / 0-monthly-payment finance schemes.

Value & The Competition

The Formula S series’ pricing strategy is very clear: use mid-to-large size to attack mid-size prices.

Against the Xiaomi SU7, the Formula S series is longer but has a 40 mm shorter wheelbase than the SU7. It has a higher range ceiling (900 km vs the SU7’s 830 km); and its chassis technology (Yunian-M magnetorheological) is a differentiator the SU7 lacks.

The weakness is the brand’s lack of recognition in the sedan space, and the fact that its driver-assistance system has not been validated at scale.

Against the Tesla Model 3, the Formula S series beats it comprehensively on space, range, and equipment. But on the maturity of chassis tuning and driving communication, Tesla’s accumulated expertise is not something a newcomer can match in the short term.

Overall, the Formula S series is an aggressive newcomer. It does not try to beat the SU7 or Model 3 on every dimension; instead it concentrates firepower on three points – size, range, and chassis technology – and uses the price gap to create appeal.

Buyers who want a large, long-range car and are not sensitive to brand aura, are quite likely to give the Formula S series some serious consideration. But for those who value brand resale value, driver-assistance maturity, or ecosystem experience, the SU7 and Model 3 remain the safer choices.

Editor’s Take

The fact that Fang Cheng Bao is building a sedan is more noteworthy than the Formula S itself.

A company that built its brand identity on rugged off-roaders has, with its first sedan, gone straight into the most competitive segment – the 200,000 yuan electric sport sedan market – and chose a dual-body-style strategy of “coupe + shooting brake”.

This suggests BYD’s read on the segment is that demand for “individualistic sedans” is moving from the fringe to the mainstream.

In terms of product definition, the Formula S series has not taken the “loaded but mediocre” route. The debut of the Yunian-M magnetorheological suspension, a 900 km range ceiling, and the open interfaces of BYD Smart Ecosystem 2.0 are all differentiators with a real technical barrier.

However, it is important to be clear headed. The real test for the Formula S series is not the spec sheet but how it performs after delivery. In the 200,000 yuan market, examples of class-leading specs with disappointing execution are not rare.
